Supplements for organic mushrooms. Rowi Van Korlaar from SuperChamp explains

Rowi Van Korlaar – co-owner in SuperChamp, Dutch producer of supplements for mushrooms – answers questions about organic mushroom supplements and the quality control process.

SuperChamp is a Dutch family business with more than 25 years of experience in producing and packaging mushroom supplements. These supplements provide a faster cultivation progress and they will increase the yield. SuperChamp is a company that supplies its supplements worldwide.

  • Rowi, what is the difference between organic and non-organic compost and mushrooms?

This is circular and sustainable agriculture. To produce organic compost you are required to use organic residual materials from the agricultural and poultry farming, to make a new raw material for growing organic mushrooms. After that these raw materials suppling back to organic agriculture farming companies to finish their crops.

All raw materials to produce organic supplements are likewise from originate organic residual flows exclusively from organic cultivation. This production process is entirely isolated to guarantee an organic end product. This means that all the suppliers of organic raw materials be affiliated to a controlling organisations.

  •  Who and how controls the organic origin of the supplement?

Here at SuperChamp in Holland we know that producing supplements-compost-mushrooms organically is not easy. The entire process from the raw materials to final product is under strict supervision of the SKAL (this organisation oversees organic production in the Netherlands). All ingredients and production methods from start to finish require intensive attention, without the use of artificial additives, to achieve a completely organic mushrooms. Because of the extra controls, requirements, and smaller purchasing market is it more difficult to collect your raw materials and that can increase the purchasing price – which make organic supplements be usually more expensive than usual.

  • Rowi, which types of ORGANIC supplements for mushrooms SuperChamp offers?

We produce two different kinds of supplements, with different protein levels.

Organic Bio and Organic Bio-Pro, the second one has a much higher protein level, that could give a higher yield instead of the product Organic Bio.

That is another challenge to produce a high protein organic supplement for a reasonable price. So, when you choose the supplier – specially for organic supplements – it is required to check the protein level. Not the price decides – but the level of protein. In SuperChamp we know that it is a challenge to produce a high protein level organic supplement compared to the conventional supplements. We manage to do it, you can consult with us about pricing and offer.

  • How can a compost producer check if the supplement is organic? Certificate?

We have every year audit to prove that we are producing organic. With the right raw materials. They check that we are doing what we are saying, and saying what we are doing. With all the ingredients and finished products.

Therefore, we have a registration of SKAL – organisation that oversees organic production in the Netherlands.

I believe the best way is to ask your future supplier about the registration and audit they have.

  • In SuperChamp how you ensure the best quality control for your clients?
  • Control of the nutrient content.
  • Additional control of our suppliers and documentation.
  • Extra analyses (a lot), think about of Pesticides. To be sure that everything is Organic without Pesticides.
