UMDIS Mushroom Agency made a price monitoring of mushrooms in Romania.
Romania is the country where culture of mushroom consumption is pretty developed – however it is usually about forest mushrooms.
In Romania work around 15 mushroom farms. The largest are Boglar and Iazul.
Mushroom prices
500 gr – 9.49 lei – 18.98 lei/kg (3.82 Euro/kg) – white button mushrooms
1 kg – 16.99 lei (3.42 Euro/kg) – white button mushrooms
500 gr – 10.49lei – 20.98 lei/kg (4.22 Euro/kg) – chestnut mushrooms
250 gr – 12.99 lei – 51.96 lei/kg (10.44 Euro/kg) – chestnut mushrooms bio
500 gr – 9.99 lei – 19.98 lei/kg (4.02 Euro/kg) – oyster mushrooms
So chestnut mushrooms are 10,47% more expensive than white button mushrooms.
As well chestnut mushrooms bio are nearly 173,3% more expensive than regular chestnut mushrooms in Romania.
By the way – that is quite unique – for example in Austria bio mushrooms can be 35% more expensive than non-bio. What is reflects some Romanian point of view on price formation. Romania is not the richest country in EU – and usually bio products, or vegan products, or just more qualitative products here can cost 100% or 200% more expensive than the usual options. While in most of other countries the difference is not so high. Probably it is because of the belief that it is not possible to sell the product on the higher price for not rich consumer – but as you have a percentage of rich consumers (if they can afford themselves bio products they are rich according to the belief 🙂 – you can receive all your margin on them.
