Why should you choose aluminium shelves – not steel? Ron Hegger from DMP

Many mushroom producers while building new rooms ask now the same question – should they consider aluminium shelving or steel? Five years ago, the simple answer was – you can choose steel if they are galvanized. But now we see that nearly all mushroom farms in the world, and specially in Europe – choose aluminium. So – WHY?

Ron Hegger from Dutch Mushroom Projects company, one of TOP suppliers for mushroom business worldwide, – answers this question. DMP company has 43 years’ experience as highly specialized turn-key supplier to the mushroom industry.

We don’t sell steel racks anymore. World becomes more modern – and we comply with that. With respect to food safety, aluminum is the better choice.

The aluminum racks do not require any surface treatment. Anodizing is optional. Besides this, aluminum has a much high rest value over galvanized steel. You can easily recycle it for other applications. Steel racks require some kind of surface treatment, such as galvanize, to protect it from corrosion. Even though galvanized steel can be recycled, the scrap value of steel racks is minimum.

Summary; main advantages of aluminium growing racks over conventional steel racks are superior durability and corrosion resistance, less weight for transportation, and higher residual value.

Ron from Dutch Mushroom Projects tells: «Our growing racks are designed for heavy loads and less flex for an even compost and casing layer. DMP can offer premium quality aluminium growing racks for at a very competitive price».
