Sylvan have annouced the availability of two new mushroom strains – Bavarian Brown and SPX 281. These strains are part of Sylvan’s breeding program and are globally protected.
Bavarian Brown is a brown Agaricus strain. After doing well in North America, Sylvan decided to launch it in Europe and they plan to expand to other markets later on, like China, South America, South Africa and Australasia. Sylvan says this strain has a rich golden-brown (chestnut) colour and a longer shelf life. It is designed for both hand-picking and machine harvesting, and works well in all sizes- from small cremini mushrooms to larger portobellos.
Alongside Bavarian Brown, Sylvan has also introduced SPX 281 – a sporeless oyster mushroom. Developed through their Oyster Breeding Program, SPX 281 has a flatter, larger cap and shorter stems. Sylvan says this strain helps reduce waste, improves shelf life and of course lowers the risk of spore related issues for pickers. It matures fast and can lead to an extra harvest per year which may help save energy and reduce packaging needs.
