Recent data from Teagasc shows that in 2024, the farm gate value of the Irish mushroom sector increased to €158.6 million.
This was driven by an increase in production (from 68,284 tonnes in 2023 to 70,145 tonnes of mushrooms in 2024) coupled with a weighted average increase in growers’ farm gate prices by 13%.
The mushroom industry in 2024 experienced a generally positive outlook, supported by strong demand. However, the early part of the year was marked by challenges, including an outbreak of surface green mould, which affected yields. During the summer and autumn, high disease levels continued to impact growers’ productivity. In addition, inconsistent compost quality during the latter half of 2024 worsened the situation.
Fortunately, the quality of compost in 2025 has been outstanding, providing much-needed relief. The graph below demonstrates the production trend from 2010 to 2024:

In 2024, the weighted average farm gate price (excluding flat rate VAT) increased to €2.26/kg. The increase in farm gate price was necessary to cover rising input costs for growers. These statistics account for 25 growers in ROI growing on 32 farms. The graph below illustrates the farm gate value trend from 2010 to 2024.
