When I looked on the website of JF McKenna I liked one phrase from their client`s review: “The whole team at JF McKenna will go the extra mile”, which means “make effort”. Being the editor of UMDIS Mushroom Information Agency, I agreed on our promo company visit to JF McKenna in the beginning of July. In the moment of buying the tickets – I realised that JF McKenna, general contractor and supplier for mushroom industry, was located in Northern Ireland, not in Ireland as I thought – so I needed visa to UK as it is not EU anymore. After thinking about the situation for some hours I wrote to JF McKenna: – Maybe you will come to Ireland and show me your clients there? I was amazed receiving the answer: – Yes, for sure. I thought that time – wow, this company really “will go the extra mile”!

According to the monitoring by UMDIS agency for the week of August 7-13, 2023, in the Moldovan supermarket, a kilogram of white champignons by weight costs 2.73 Euros. While on the same shelf there is a kilogram package of champignons at a price of 3.5 Euro – much more expensive, but probably the producer is different. A package of white champignons 400 grams costs 1.6 euros, 250 grams – 1.24 euros, 200 grams – 1.13 euros. Also, on the shelf of the Moldovan supermarket there are mixtures of white and brown champignons – 400 grams – 2 euros. For comparison, in Moldova, cucumbers cost 1 Euro, tomatoes – 1.2 Euro per kilogram. Chicken fillet in a package – 2.2 euros per half kilogram. A kilogram of champignons is between vegetables and chicken fillet. So, for a kilo of champignons you can buy about 3 kilograms of cucumbers.

In Romania we visited oyster farm Bispora Trade. It has 6 modern growing rooms. Mushrooms here are grown on the racks (actually usual champignon racks), there are control computers, climate control systems. Bispora Trade started to operate in 2014 as champignon production. After four years the owners decided to switch to oysters from button mushrooms. As the owner Corina Tiganas tells – for her to produce oysters is much easier. And that is not about making the right temperature or humidity.

This is what a fruit and vegetable shelf looks like in Tashkent. We don’t find mushrooms there. – No, there are no mushrooms, – an employee of a large Makro supermarket in the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, in the Chelanzar district, tells us. To our question, there are no mushrooms now or they never being sold here at all, she says that at all. – People rarely take mushrooms here, –  she explain to us. As for pickled mushrooms, they are represented by a fairly wide range compared to the complete absence of fresh mushrooms. There are Chinese Lorado (3.6 euros for 580 ml), Bonduelle (2.5 euros for 280 grams). Also on the shelf are two products that look local (or possibly imported but packaged in Uzbekistan). “Master of Taste”, for a liter jar 3.3 euros and Foodmaxx also in a liter – 3.7 euros.
