Ema Champignon Giebels GmbH & Co is the mushroom farm in Germany, doing just brown champignon mushrooms and filling 5 rooms each week. It is situated not far from the Dutch border.
The farm belongs to RPZ Rheinische Pilz-Zentrale GmbH – large German family owned comany, suppling mushrooms worldwide. Ema employs 40 people and has a Dutch grower Wim Janssen who showed UMDIS around the farm. We visited this farm in November 2023.
Ema Champignon buys compost for brown mushrooms from CNC.
– Can you tell me why you use CNC compost on this farm?
– We use the CNC compost for more than seven years. You see, there is very close driving from them to us. But that is not why. We grow brown mushrooms. For white mushrooms you can choose compost, and for browns it should be CNC. We really think the CNC compost for brown mushrooms is the best as we have better results on it.
– How is the communication with CNC managers? Are they helpful?
– We never have problems with their compost, it is good. But sometimes have difficulties with transport. It’s not so easy with trucks. I send them an e-mail or contact them by phone – and they try to make a decision how to do better next time.
– Do you receive the support on technology of production from CNC if you need it?
– Yes, of course, they come. Few months ago, we had less mushrooms then usual – they came, we thought together why it might happen and they advised us something to change in technology. And in a few weeks later it came like usual. So yes, I am happy with that supplier.
– Do you know how many farms are there in Germany?
– I think 12 – but really big farms just 6 – rollers of the industry.
– Why you grow browns?
– It is the decision of RPZ, this farm is a bit older than other farms – and brown champignons is easier to grow, not so demanding in climate. We want to sell a very good mushroom – browns as well as white. We can make a good price when the mushroom is good.
– Germany is the country in Europe which consumes probably the same amount of brown mushrooms as white. Why?
– Well, brown mushroom does not have so much water inside. It’s drier. Yes, and it tastes better. I am sure in it. It is much more like the forest mushroom.
