The History of Lambert Spawn

The company was founded in 1903 by Louis F. Lambert. By 1907, Lambert’s American Spawn Company was marketing at least seven different Agaricus strains in the U.S. Around 1915, Lambert moved his operations to Coatesville, Pennsylvania, in the heart of the mushroom industry. In 1925, Lambert selected a white Agaricus bisporus strain from a cream-colored mushroom bed. This strain later served as the basis for the Dutch-bred U1 and U3 hybrid strains still widely cultivated today.

Lambert Spawn Company has long played a leading role in the American mushroom industry. Its production capacity is currently spread across three separate facilities. It’s portfolio includes not only spawn manufacturing but also test plants, a research center, and a pilot farm.
