Spanish mushroom producers shared why their market is different

– Spain is the third country in Europe in the production of mushrooms, – Pedro Garcia Fajardo, Amycel’s representative in Spain, told us. – It grows 120,000 tons of mushrooms a year. Somewhere half of the production is concentrated in the South, and the second half in the North of the country. This week, from 20 to 22 March, Mushroom Information Agency UMDIS hosted a group of Spanish mushroom producers in our Picking School in Poland. The participants were very satisfied with the courses, we compared the Polish and Spanish markets a lot, we looked at what experience they could learn from.

In Spain, the market is quite “spoiled” when it comes to mushroom quality.

– Often the required quality is even higher than in Poland, – says Samuel Geminaz from the Champiñones y Setas Giménez farm.

Mario Rodriguez from the Champi Graja farm says that in Spain the market is also very diverse in terms of products.

– We have about 30 types of products: mushrooms of different sizes, with and without roots, sliced, mixes of different mushrooms… Each client, each supermarket chain requires something different – shares Mario Rodriguez.

By the way, in Spain they produce and consume a lot of exotic mushrooms. This is the only country in Europe where the majority of exotic mushrooms are produced on the substrate from China, while in other countries the emphasis is rather on the substrate of local production. This is because the substrate supplier for Spain is in second place – and we have the quality of the mushroom in the first place.

-In Spain 70-80% of exotic mushrooms are produced on the substrate from China, – explains Pedro Garcia Fajardo, from Amycel.
